How Ready Rooms can help

A room you can rent with your income

Independent shared and private rooms with providers that accept VA benefits, Social Security, SSDI, or wages.

While you wait on VA programs

On a HUD-VASH or SSVF waitlist? You can look for a room now - contacting Ready Rooms doesn't affect a VA application.

Help for case managers

VA social workers, SSVF and GPD staff, and outreach teams can refer a veteran directly.

How it works

  1. Tell us what you needArea, budget, income, room preference, and anything a home needs to accept. It takes a few minutes and costs nothing.
  2. We review itA person on our team - not just an automated list - looks for independent providers in our Texas network who may fit.
  3. Matching providers get your referralThey see a summary first: your first name, last initial, area, budget, and needs - not your phone number or email.
  4. Interested providers contact youYour contact details are shared only as you authorized. The provider reaches out about availability, and we follow up on the outcome.

Emergency help vs. housing navigation

Emergency response - outreach, emergency beds, help with back rent, vouchers - runs through the VA and the nonprofits it funds. Housing navigation is finding a room you can rent with your income. That's what Ready Rooms does. Many veterans use both.

Usually a good fit

  • You have VA, Social Security, SSDI, pension, or job income - or it's about to start
  • You're staying with family, in a motel, or in a program that's ending
  • You're open to a shared home or a private room in a shared house

Start with the VA instead if

  • You need a bed tonight
  • You have no income and none is pending
  • You need medical care, detox, or 24-hour supervision

Texas also runs a Homeless Veteran Program.

Is Ready Rooms part of the VA?

No. Ready Rooms is an independent nonprofit, not affiliated with or endorsed by the VA. For VA homeless programs, call 877-424-3838.

Can Ready Rooms get me a HUD-VASH voucher?

No. The VA, HUD, and local housing authorities run HUD-VASH. Ready Rooms helps you find a room to rent with your own income.

I have no income yet. Can Ready Rooms help?

Options are limited without income, because providers rent rooms. Start with the VA and SSVF; tell us if a benefit or job is starting.

Referring a veteran? VA social workers, SSVF/GPD case managers, outreach teams, VSOs

Include the area, income source and amount, budget, and timing. You'll confirm you have the person's permission (or documented authority) to share their information with housing providers. A Ready Rooms referral doesn't replace a VA referral.
