What a private room means
Your own bedroom. A shared home. More privacy.
A private room usually means you have a bedroom of your own, while common areas like the kitchen, living room and laundry are shared with other residents of the home. It's a middle ground between sharing a bedroom and renting an entire apartment.
Exact setups vary by provider. Ask each home what comes with the room.
- Your own bedroomA room that's yours, with a door you can close.
- A shared homeKitchen, living room and other spaces shared with housemates.
- Not automatically includedA private bathroom, a separate apartment or any kind of care. Some homes offer more; we'll tell you what a home actually provides.
More than a room
What private-room housing can include

- Utilities-inclusive optionsSome arrangements roll bills into one monthly payment.

Features and services vary by home and provider.
Who private rooms may work for
A private room is a room preference, not a category
People look for private rooms for all kinds of reasons. Ready Rooms helps people seeking a private room who are:
- Living on SSI or SSDI, Social Security, VA benefits, work income or other income
- Rebuilding after an eviction, a broken lease, limited rental history or credit challenges (second chance housing)
- Coming home after incarceration (reentry housing)
- Veterans and older adults on a fixed income
- In recovery, or adults who want independent living
- Simply looking for more privacy than a shared bedroom
These situations don't mean every provider will accept every resident. We use your intake to look for providers that may fit your actual situation, and each provider makes its own admission decision.

Inside the Housing Network
A private room still needs to be the right housing fit
Homes in the Ready Rooms network differ in housing model, qualification criteria, household environment, amenities and level of support. A vacant bedroom isn't automatically a good match. Before suggesting a home, we consider:
- Housing model and residents. Who the home is set up to serve, and whether the household is a good fit for you.
- Provider criteria. What the provider considers on income, background and rental history.
- Room setup and services. Furnishings, utilities, meals, transportation and support, as actually offered.
- Location. Whether the home works for your daily life.

Private room questions
What is considered a private room?
A bedroom of your own inside a shared home. You typically share the kitchen, living room and other common areas with other residents. Setups vary by provider.
Are private rooms furnished?
Many are. A lot of homes in our network offer rooms that are ready for move-in, but not all. Tell us if you need a furnished room and we'll look for homes that offer one.
Are utilities included with private rooms?
In some homes, yes. Some providers include utilities in the monthly rate and others bill them separately. We'll help you understand what a home's rate covers.
Can I find a private room if I have an eviction or poor credit?
Often, yes. Some providers in our network consider applicants with evictions or credit challenges. Tell us about your situation up front so we can focus on providers that may accept it. See second chance housing for more.
Can someone receiving SSI or SSDI get a private room?
Yes, if the rate fits the person's budget. Many providers accept SSI and SSDI. Private rooms usually cost more than shared rooms, so sharing your budget helps us find options that work. See SSI and SSDI housing.
Do private rooms include a private bathroom?
Not usually. Most private rooms share a bathroom with other residents. Some homes have rooms with their own bathroom. If that's important to you, tell us in your intake.
Can a case manager or family member submit the housing request for me?
Yes. A family member can help you complete the intake, and professionals can use our referral form. We'll need the person's permission to share their information with providers.
How does Ready Rooms help me find a private room?
You complete a short intake with your location, budget, income, timing and room preference. Our housing team reviews it and connects you with participating providers that may fit. Getting matched is free to you.
Ready Rooms provides housing navigation and referral. Housing is offered by independently operated providers in the Ready Rooms network, who set their own rates and make their own admission decisions.
