Before You Start Calling Properties: A Housing Readiness Checklist Beyond the Paperwork
Having your documents ready is necessary but not sufficient - being genuinely ready to apply also means knowing your real budget, having a clear answer on shared vs. private housing, being reachable and responsive, and knowing what questions to ask before you commit. This checklist covers the non-paperwork side of getting ready.

This article is about everything else: the practical readiness that makes the actual calling-and-applying process go faster once your paperwork is in order.
1. Know your real number, not a rough guess
Before you call a single property, know your actual monthly budget for total housing costs - not rent alone, but rent plus utilities plus whatever else the provider expects. 2. Decide shared vs. private before you're asked
Many providers will ask upfront whether you want a private room or a shared living arrangement. If you haven't thought this through, you'll either hesitate on the call or say yes to something that doesn't actually work for you. Be honest with yourself about what you can realistically live with, not just what sounds ideal - shared housing is often more available and more affordable, and for many people it works well.
3. Have your move-in funds mapped out, not just your monthly budget
A common gap: someone can afford the monthly rent but hasn't planned for the security deposit, first month, or application fees due at move-in - sometimes all at once. Know exactly what you have available right now for move-in costs, separate from your ongoing monthly budget, before you start applying.
4. Make sure you're actually reachable
Housing providers, especially smaller independent ones, often can't leave several messages trying to reach an applicant - if they can't get through quickly, they move to the next person on the list. Before you start applying:
- Confirm your phone can receive calls and voicemail, and that your voicemail box isn't full
- Check your email regularly, including spam/junk folders
- If you're applying through a case manager or referral, make sure they have a reliable way to reach you too
5. Questions worth asking before you commit to an application
Different providers have different requirements, and it's reasonable to ask before you apply rather than find out after:
- What's actually included in the monthly cost, and what's billed separately?
- What income types do you accept?
- What's the realistic timeline from application to move-in?
- Is there an application fee, and is it refundable if I'm not approved?
- What happens if I need to reach someone after I move in?

6. Be realistic about timelines and approval
No housing provider - and no organization that helps connect people with housing, including Ready Rooms - can guarantee placement or a specific response time. Availability changes, and every provider makes its own approval decisions. Being ready to apply to more than one place, rather than pinning everything on a single property, generally gets people housed faster.
7. Requirements vary - a lot - by provider
One property might do a quick phone screening; another might want a formal application, references, and a longer review. Neither is wrong - they're just different. Don't assume that what one provider asked for is what every provider will ask for, and don't be discouraged if a requirement at one place doesn't apply somewhere else.

Not having an answer to every item here shouldn't stop you from starting your search - it's a readiness checklist, not a gate. If you don't have a firm move-in timeline yet, say "flexible" and refine it as you go.
